Moore Family Cemetery

Virginia Beach, VA
(Old Princess Anne County)

My instructions were that the graves were behind the Verizon building on Indian River, near Muddy Creek Road.  Much to my surprise there were two Verizon buildings near the Downtown Pungo intersection.  We got out and did a visual inspection of the older building, facing Princess Anne Road.  That just did not seem the likely spot.  But the back of the newer Verizon building was heavily fenced, housing phone trucks awaiting their calling to action.  Next door, also heavily fenced, was a Coast Guard antenna farm.  There was a tree line in back of a field behind the building.  But it seemed unapproachable from Indian River Road.  I decided to do a third drive past.  The slow approach showed that if one parked in the Verizon driveway, near the road, there was a narrow spot where one could cross into the adjacent field.  Then if one walked to the back western corner of that field, there was one narrow spot where one could cross a water filled ditch into the back field.  Then it was a clear pathway to a copse of trees in the middle of the field.  My eye was on that group of trees as being the most likely grave location.  Thankful that I had followed advice and worn knee boots, I traveled the plowed field easily.  As we neared the trees I was rewarded with the sight of an almost hidden tombstone.  The location was correct!

At one time I had planned to bring my hedge clippers on the excursion.  When I reached the grave location, I was very sorry those clippers had been forgotten.  The island was densely overgrown with briars and vines so strong that it was impossible for one of my strength to tear with my hands.  I took the Mississippi girl approach and forced my way into the bramble, frightening my companion, who had never accompanied me on such a task.  I pushed down the vines as best possible with my heavy boots and leaned in to view the grave, resting my body on a vine that supported me up while I was snapping the precious camera shots.  The grave beside the first proved even more difficult.

We then decided to investigate the rest of the area by circling the treed area.  That proved the best choice.  Graves on the opposite side were a little easier to reach.  Still the heavy vines and briars made the navigation very difficult.  Having been told that some of the tombstones were impossible to read, I had stopped to buy chalk before driving to Pungo.  The chalk proved immensely valuable, offering clear writing where none had previously been discernable.  Most of the permanent occupants of the family cemetery were from the Moore or Petree family.  Possibly Mrs. Petree was a Moore daughter.  Their history remains to be uncovered.  Their rest is no longer ignored.

The cemetery was found and mapped out in the mid 1980’s by Donald W. Moore who is also a descendent of Andrew Moore.  It is Donald Moore who provided the layout of the cemetery and who exactly is known to be buried there.  Currently with Donald Moore, this writer, Elizabeth Buterbaugh of Western Pennsylvania are attempting to have the Moore family cemetery cleaned up with the help of the Princess Anne Military Order of Stars and Bars and the Soldiers of the Confederate Soldiers within the Princess Anne County Area.  These groups, volunteer their time and physical help in restoring the cemeteries.  A guardian is then appointed to help maintain and continue the preservation of these found cemeteries.  This particular one, the Moore cemetery, is one of the more recent finds that is large in number.  It is suspected and will be hopefully proven out to contain even more graves when the work is completed.  Currently activity is progressing with the 4 land owners at getting this cemetery cleaned and to an appropriate and proper cemetery.  One of the land owners themselves can trace their roots to members within the cemetery.  It is hoped that we will be able to provide to all more additional information on this cemetery.

The property that the cemetery was and continued to remain in direct Moore lineage until 1923 when it was lost to the Moore line in a tax sale but a unproven family story is that it was lost due to a gambling wager.  The property was however purchased by cousins of the Moore’s and remains within those lines that there is a connection to the Moore Family.  This particular property can be traced back a multiple of generations of being within the Moore family.  If the stones and trees of that property could only speak, the untold stories it would tell.  It is via one of the land owners, that when permission was granted he spoke of playing as a child in the cemetery on the property.  He spoke of fond memories of the old homestead.  We needless to say, must have the written permission of all 4 land owners for the cemetery clean up and there is the reluctance of 1 still remaining to secure or further details would be made known.  It is hoped that once the cemetery may be cleaned, a re-dedication service could be performed but here again due to issues with the 1 land owner, everything is up in the air currently.

We are hoping to establish a non-profit organization to help with keeping this cemetery maintained and possible being better secured from the surrounding fields and the crops that are planted there yearly.  I know if further information of the family or of the cemetery is needed someone can Contact Me for greater details.  This cemetery and it’s heritage must be maintained and continued.

Respectfully submitted,
