Anderson Family

The Anderson family was a long but gratifying research project.  Mother & I had long suspected that the wife of Pleasant C. Crenshaw was an Anderson.  It was the only explanation for my Grandfather's given name of Anderson.  Thanks to the research diligence of Frank Cook, Winifred Louisa Crenshaw's death certificate was located.  That document indicated that her mother was indeed an Anderson.

We knew Elizabeth Anderson to have been born about 1810 in Georgia.  But she did not fit into any of the Georgia born Newton / Neshoba Anderson families that I located.  The answer was found accidentally in Autauga Co, AL while searching for Crenshaw records.  Autauga Co, AL estate records hinted at a familial relationship between the Robert Crenshaw family and that of the family of George Anderson.  An intense study of this Anderson family followed.  Much to my elation, I found George Anderson's son James Madison Anderson moving to the area of Lauderdale Co, MS that bordered the Kemper / Newton / Neshoba county lines.  James Madison Anderson indeed had a daughter named Elizabeth.  But that Elizabeth was much younger than the census age given for our Elizabeth in 1850.  Lauderdale Co, MS Court Records soon proved that James Madison Anderson's daughter Elizabeth married Robert Crenshaw, the man who trailed Pleasant Crenshaw from Autauga Co, AL to Kemper Co, MS.  That family moved to Houston Co, TX following the Civil War.

Again Frank Cook comes through with a marvelous find.  At the Lauderdale Co, MS Archives he located the Will for James Madison Anderson's mother Sarah Ann Goss Crenshaw Anderson.  That document held the answer to our search.  Listed as a child of Sarah and sister of James Madison Anderson was Elizabeth Crenshaw.  Our Pleasant Crenshaw married the sister (Elizabeth) of James Madison Anderson.  Pleasant's probable brother Robert Crenshaw married the daughter (Elizabeth) of James Madison Anderson.

The really interesting fact to be uncovered in this investigation was the fact that Sarah Ann Goss (wife of George Anderson and mother of both Elizabeth & James Madison Anderson) was first married in Granville Co, NC to Maybourn Crenshaw.  The parentage of Maybourn (also spelled Mabin / Maben) might provide long needed answers to the Crenshaw puzzle.

Pleasant Crenshaw's wife, Elizabeth Anderson, died in the same general time period and location as her mother, Sarah Ann Goss Crenshaw Anderson.  Neither grave has been located.  The most probable burial site is the Lauderdale Co, MS plantation site of James Madison Anderson, who removed from Mississippi to Tyler Co, TX.  That burial site probably lies deserted or plowed under on a Lauderdale County farm.

The parentage of George Anderson has not yet been discovered.  Sarah Ann Goss' first husband Maybourn Crenshaw (Granshaw / Granger) died in Elbert Co, GA.  Therefore it is most likely that he married Sarah in that county.  We know there to have been problems between George Anderson and the friends / family of Sarah Ann's first husband, as George was charged with assaulting the wife of Maybourn Crenshaw's estate administrator.  We also don't know where George Anderson died.  The last records located for him were in Autauga Co, AL.  A very elderly Sarah Ann was living with her son James Madison Anderson at the time of the 1850 Lauderdale Co, MS Census.

Female descendants of the above Anderson family qualify for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution through the Patriot Service of Sarah Ann Goss Crenshaw Anderson's father, Thomas Goss, and grandfather, John Shearman.
