Family

Perhaps the best chronicle of Rev. George Christian Reisinger's life was written in 1982 by his Granddaughter Frances (Natho) Sutton to his Granddaughter Lillyan (Johnson) Holmberg.  Frances' story begins with Rev. George Reisinger's father:  "George Reisinger Sr. (signature shown above) born July 26 - 1802 (This was actually the birth date shown on the tombstone of George Sr.'s wife Marianne Beilstein) in Wembach, Hessen - Darmstadt, Germany.  (Georg Reisinger was born before his father moved from Rohrbach to Wembach.)  He kept books for a wealthy titled man who owned a very large estate there (He was a stocking weaver per church records.  This probably referred to a later occupation of "keeper of the fish ponds.")  George Reisinger('s) children were George Reisinger Jr. born April 5 - 1831 in Wembach, Hessen - Darmstadt, Germany.  He died in Springville N. York, May 23 - 1902.  He is buried in Danville Ill along with his wife.  He had thirteen children.  George Jr & his sisters & brothers came to the United States when they were grown 1850.  (Only George Jr. emigrated in 1850.  His siblings came individually during the 1852 - 1860 time period, his youngest two brothers arriving 17 January 1860 with their mother Marianne Beilstein.)  They settled in Baltimore MD in 1850.  His brothers Fred & John had a confectioners & Bakery store in Washington D.C  (Fred's confectioner store was in Baltimore.  Sister Lisetta's husband Fredrich Kowallek also owned a confectioner's store in Baltimore.  Brothers John & Jacob each owned confectioner stores in Washington DC.)  George Jr. wanted to become a minister so he left Baltimore & went to Concordia College in Ft. Wayne Ind. to study.  He graduated from Concordia College in 1856.  He married Louise Brackhage whose family lived close to the school & with whom he lived while studying at school.  They lived on a farm.

They had 13 children:  Elise Marie Engelina - April 8, 1864 in Pekin Ill; Louise R. Ritter, Emelia Reisinger Johnson born 1880; Alma Reisinger Frase born 1877; Paul Gustave 1876; Frederic Wm Philip 1873; Clara Reisinger Miller 1871; John George 1868;  Johanna Reisinger Colberg 1866; Elise Marie Natho 1864 (She was called Lillie by choice by her father); Otelia Reisinger 1862; Amalia Kathrin 1860; Louise 1859 in Ohio.  (Note:  Mrs. Sutton included Lillie & Louise twice in the above list.  She omitted William & Amaila Rosina.)

Rev. George Reisinger first church was in Auglaize County, Ohio (1856 - 1864), Then Pekin Ill (1864 - 1872), Then Danville Ill (1872 - 1878), Then Wilton Iowa (1878 - 1885), Then Springville N. York (1885 - 1902)        (Note:  This differs slightly in years from the Lutheran Church Archive records.)

He died in 1902 & was brought back to Danville Ill where his daughter Lillie Reisinger Natho lived.  He was buried in Springhill Cemetery, Danville Ill."

The birth of George Christian Reisinger is chronicled in the records of Evangelische Kirche Rohrbach (Kr. Dieburg) as follows:  1831, on the 5th of April at 9:00 in the evening was born to Johann Georg Reisinger, German resident in the affiliate of Wembach & his wife Maria Beilstein the 3rd son, George Christian. Godparents were the unmarried brother of the mother George Christian Beilstein of Lichtenberg and the unmarried George Kaull of Wembach.  George Christian Reisinger was confirmed in the same church in 1845.  The area of Rohrbach-Wembach-Hahn was a Waldensian colony, thus explaining the use of the phrase German resident in the birth record.  Evangelische Kirche Rohrbach (Kr. Dieburg) began its history as Kirchenbuch der Waldenser Gemeide Rohrbach-Wembach-Hahn. A search of the early church records turned up only French names.  George Christian Reisinger born 1831, 3rd son of the 2nd marriage of Johann Georg Reisinger and his wife Maria Barbara Beilstein, is the first family member whose birth was recorded in the records of Evangelische Kirche Rohrbach.  Brigitte Köhler of Wembach was a wonderful resource, providing the information that prior to 1830 German residents of Wembach attended the Evangelische Kirche in Ober-Ramstadt.  This researcher then found early Wembach records for the Reisinger family in the records of Evangelische Kirche Ober-Ramstadt (Kr. Darmstadt).  Records for the family's Rohrbach sojourn were found in Evangelisch Kirche Nieder Modau (Kr Dieburg).

The first Reisinger to migrate to the Rohrbach-Wembach-Hahn area was George Christian Reisinger's grandfather Aegidius Thomas Reisinger, son of miller Johannes Georgius Reisinger of Elfeld (now Eltville), Hessen-Nassau.  That town is located just across the Rhein River from Mainz.  The elder Reisinger, an orphan at age seven, came to the area to learn the stockingweaver trade, a specialty of the Waldensian Colonie.   Settling into his new home, Thomas Reisinger met and married Catherine Pastre, the oldest daughter of the Captain of the Waldensian Colonie, Jean-Chretien Pastre.   The couple's oldest son, Johann Georg Reisinger, continued in the stockingweaver trade until demand for the product began to decline, about the beginning of the 1800's, due to a change in fashion.  Following that time Johann Georg Reisinger made his living as a Pond Overseer, managing the fish captured in the manorial ponds.  He built a nice brick home for his family at 4 Schulstraße about the time he married his second wife Marianne Beilstein, mother of George Christian Reisinger.  (Thanks to Brigitte Köhler of Wembach for historical details.)

Hesse Darmstadt Map which includes Wembach and surrounding area.

Two of George Reisinger's siblings (George Nicholas Reisinger and the first Elisabetha Margarethe Reisinger) died young in Wembach.  One brother, Phillip Lorenz Reisinger, made his lifetime home in Wembach.  One brother, Johann Karl Reisinger, is not tracked.   The remainder of the children (five sons and two daughters) migrated to America, but not as a group.  The two youngest siblings came as children 12 November 1859 per Rohrbach church records.  They arrived at the Port of Baltimore, with their mother Marianne Beilstein, on 17 January 1860.  In 1860, obviously due to the exodus of his mother and the remainder of his siblings, Phillip Lorenz Reisinger took over the household remaining at 4 Schulstraße, the Wembach home that his father built in 1825.  That father, Johann Georg Reisinger, died in Wembach on November 29, 1864.

On September 1, 1856 in Allen Co, IN, George Reisinger declared his intent to become an American Citizen.  He listed his age as 25 and indicated that he was a native of Hesse Darmstadt.  He embarked from the port of Bremen and arrived at the port of Baltimore on May 25, 1850.  His Naturalization Application is in Allen Co, IN Book 3, p. 10.

While a ministerial student at Concordia College in Ft. Wayne, IN, George Christian Reisinger met his future bride, Louise Wilhelmine Henriette Brackhage, while boarding in the household of her parents:  Johann Heinrich Brackhage and his wife Marie Wilhelmine Lindemayer-Burre.  A Lutheran historian recently told me that it was a common practice for Ft. Wayne Lutheran families with marriageable aged daughters to invite a young Concordia ministerial student to board in their household.  The hope was that a marriage with their daughter might result.  That practice obviously was successful in the Brackhage household.

Concordia Historical Institute reports:  April 5, 1831 George Reisinger was born in Auernbach (should be Wembach), Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany (d. 1902). He graduated from Concordia Seminary, Fort Wayne, in 1856. He served parishes in Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, and New York. The collection at CHI contains some of his correspondence, sermons, notes, and day books.

Robert Shreckhise, researcher at Concordia Historical Institute relayed to me the following comments on George Reisinger:  "Born 15 Apr. 1831 Hesson Darmstadt; Died 23 May 1902 Springfield (Note:  should be Springville) New York; Buried Danville Illinois.  Seminary:  Concordia Seminary, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, 1856.  Ordained 14 Sept. 1856 at St. John's L. C. Wapakoneta Ohio by Rev. J. H. Werfelmann.  Parishes Served:  St. John's, Wapakoneta Ohio 14 Sept. 1856; St. John's, Pekin Illinois 9 Nov. 1862; Trinity, Danville Illinois 1 Dec. 1872; Zion, Wilton Iowa 27 Apr, 1879; Salem, Springville New York 27 Jun. 1888-1902."

The Concordia Historical Institute Quarterly Vol. III, p. 79-80 presents the article "The Missouri Synod in Northern Ohio" by Rev. George Moossel".  It reports a history of the early church in Auglaize County, Ohio as follows    "...Werfelmann's successor was candidate George Reisinger, a graduate of the Fort Wayne seminary.  He was installed September 14, 1856.  ...During the pastorate of George Reisinger St. John's in Auglaize County erected a neat brick church, 38 by 26 feet, at a cost of about $1,100.  It was the first brick church of the Missouri Synod in Northwestern Ohio.  When the church was dedicated, on the Twenty-first Sunday after Trinity, 1858, the services were the most elaborate yet observed.  A number of seminary students from Fort Wayne participated in the services, and no fewer than four pastors officiated.  Pastors Reisinger and Werfelmann served as liturgists and Professor Fleischmann and Pastor Stuetzel preached in the two services.  Pastor Reisinger served St. John's for about six years and then accepted a call to St. John's, Pekin, Ill.  His successor was Pastor Henry Steger of Cumberland, Md., who was installed in St. John's by Pastor Werfelmann the Second Sunday in Advent, 1862."

While at St. John's Lutheran Church in Pekin, IL, Pastor Reisinger was active in establishing churches in the surrounding countryside.  St. John's Lutheran Church (Sand Prairie) in Green Valley, Illinois reports the following in their booklet "Our Church For A Century - Our Savior For An Eternity":  "Before the organization of rural churches in the area, Pastor George Reisinger of St. John's, Pekin was actively engaged in mission work in the surrounding areas."  The "History of St. John Lutheran Church (Sand Prairie) 1877 - 1952" reports further:  "Pastor George Reisinger of St. John Lutheran Church in Pekin was usually called upon for baptisms, marriages and burials in the community and thus soon also began to conduct divine services in these schools.  As the attendance increased and other mission work made demands upon his time, he requested Pastor H. Sieving of St. Paul Lutheran Church southeast of Manito to help out, who thereupon began to hold regular services in the "Dixon" school.  Just how many years these services were held is not exactly known, but in 1876 Pastor E. A. Sieving succeeded his brother as pastor of St. Paul church and continued the work among the Sand Prairie Lutherans."  It was during Rev. George Reisinger's residence in Pekin, IL that his mother, Marianne Beilstein, died in Baltimore, MD (March 17, 1868) while living with George Reisinger's sister Maria Christiana Reisinger and her husband Nicholas Ruppel.

Frances Natho Sutton's 1982 letter to Lillyan Johnson Holmberg indicated, "There is a large plaque in the vestibule of our church (Trinity Lutheran in Danville, IL) about Rev. Reisinger, your grandfather, being the minister there."  The 100th Anniversary of Trinity Lutheran Congregation Danville, Illinois 1863 - 1963 featured the following information on Rev. Reisinger's pastorate.  "On the last Sunday in November, 1872, Pastor G. Reisinger was installed.  With the advent of a new minister, peace and tranquility was restored and the congregation once more began to add to its membership.  So many children applied for enrollment in the parochial school about this time that it was impossible to accommodate all of them.  Because of lack of room in the school the congregation resolved for a time not to admit children of nonmembers.  This was a pity and the congregation realized that something must be done to gather in all the souls that desired to be instructed in the saving truth of the Gospel.  Conditions made it imperative not only to provide more room but also to call another teacher to assist in the work.  The old school which at first had also served as church was now sold and a new two-story frame building was erected on the site of the old at a cost of $3,000.  A new parsonage was also built during the pastorate of Pastor Reisinger.  Mr. Zachow was called to take over a part of the work of the teaching school.  In the following years strife again broke out in the congregation and did not cease until the pastor resigned and the teacher, Mr. Zachow, was discharged."

Pictured Above Left:  Frances Natho and her husband Jesse Sutton sitting on their living room sofa in the Danville, IL home that was once that of her parents, Frank L. Natho and his wife Elise Marie Engelina "Lillie" Reisinger.  Hanging behind her, keeping a silent watch over their granddaughter, are portraits of Rev. George Christian Reisinger and his wife Louisa Wilhelmine Henriette Brakhage.

Wilton, IA brought delight and agony to the Reisinger family.  Wilton saw  the birth of George Reisinger's youngest daughter Amelia; and his 1883 naturalization as a U.S. citizen.  But the Wilton sojourn also saw the death of his wife Louise.  Louisa died very suddenly on February 17, 1888.  Her death certificate reads that she died in a few minutes, supposed to be (from) heart disease.  She was buried in Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton, IA.

(Fred Reisinger, pictured to the right, was born during the family's Danville, IL sojourn.)

Zion Lutheran Church (Wilton, IA) records include the following biography of George Reisinger:  "Having served in Danville, Ill. for seven years Rev. George Reisinger became the next pastor of Zion congregation and arrived in April 1879.  Under the guidance of Rev. Strobel the congregation became affiliated with the LCMS.  Salem congregation joined the Iowa Synod and from then on, there were two Lutheran congregations.  Rev. Reisinger was born April 4, 1831 (should be April 5th), 1831 in Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.  His wife Louisa, also came from Germany.  He received his pastoral training at Concordia, Fort Wayne, Indiana and graduated in 1856.  He was ordained in Auglaize County, Ohio on September 14, 1856 by Rev. J. H. Werfelmann.  He served in Pekin, Illinois from 1862 - 1872.  He did much missionary work in that area as well, and succeeded in establishing two other congregations, Saud Prairie (at Green Valley) and Egypt.  His own congregation erected its first church building in Pekin in 1871.  An interesting incident is told that when Rev. Reisinger was preaching at Saud Prairie (s/b Sand Prairie), it seems some young men from there had come to town (Pekin) and "sowed some wild oats."  On Sunday afternoon Rev. Reisinger rode horseback to Saud Prairie and preached against such evil doing.  On his way back to Pekin he was waylaid by those young men and was severely beaten.  Instead of discouraging him, this served to make him more avid in his mission work.  Saud Prairie is now a large country congregation and in the 1970's was served by Rev. Charles Bell of State Center, Iowa, whose wife was Harriet Happel Bell, daughter of a former Zion pastor in Wilton.  When Rev. Reisinger arrived in Wilton the court battle had not yet been resolved.  Both congregations were using the new Salem church building.  In 1881 it was awarded to the Iowa Synod and Zion decided to build a parsonage and a school which would also serve as a church until further plans could be made.  Rev. Reisinger was the father of five children, two boys and three girls.  They are Johanna Dorothea Marie Reisinger, Wilhelm Friedrick Reisinger, Clara Katherine Reisinger, Friedrick Wilhelm Reisinger, and Emilie Henriette Elsie Reisinger. (This omitted Louise, Lillie, Alma & the children who died young.)  While serving at Wilton two of Rev.'s sister were married there.  (The two Reisinger's married in Wilton were his daughters Louise & Lillie.)  Louisa Reisinger, his wife, died February 17, 1888 of a heart attack at age 44 (should be age 49) and is buried in Oakdale Cemetery.  Within several months (June, 1888) Rev. R. with his saddened family, accepted a call to Springville, N. Y.  In 1890 he married again and his wife Margaret, also a native of Saxon, Germany, joined him there with her daughter Anna.  Rev. Reisinger died May 23, 1902.  Mrs.. Margaret Reisinger returned to Wilton to live with her daughter Anna, (Mrs. Peter Boulund) until the age of 92, when she passed away on March 19, 1940. "

Shortly after Louisa's death Rev. Reisinger left Iowa to pastor a church in Springville, NY.  Louise's body was moved from Iowa to Springhill Cemetery in Danville, IL, home of her daughter Lillie.  Early cemetery records indicate she was buried in the Natho plot.  But her current plot is the Reisinger plot purchased at Rev. Reisinger's death.  She was obviously moved to that plot after he died.  Buried in the Reisinger plot are:  George & Louisa Reisinger, Amelia Reisinger Johnson, and William Reisinger.

Pictured Left:  Emilie Henriette Elise "Amelia" Reisinger (seated right), youngest daughter of Rev. George Christian Reisinger, with her four year old daughter Eason Louise Johnson visiting her sister Louise Reisinger (seated middle) and relatives in Chicago, Illinois (1906).

George Reisinger was the pastor of Salem at a pivotal time in the history of the church. Begun in 1871 as Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, the congregation grew steadily and dedicated its first building on August 28, 1887. Salem's centennial celebration booklet reads as follows: "The interior of the church was furnished in light wood with cherry trimming. Light shone through six stained glass windows. The gallery, seating about 200 people, was opposite a pulpit, elevated about ten feet above the congregation, copying the tradition of pulpits in Germany. After the erection of the church, the congregation faces a debt of $400. However, this did not deter them from joining with St. John's Church in Mortons Corners in calling Rev. George Reisinger of Wilton, Iowa, to serve as pastor with residence in Springville. On June 24, 1888, the Rev. Reisinger was installed. The following year a parsonage, costing $1,000 was constructed next to the church. The Rev. Reisinger was pastor for Springville and Mortons Corners churches for almost fourteen years. During his ministry at Salem, the Ladies Aid Society was founded early in the year 1902. Miss Edith Seedorf served as the church's first organist. Agreement reached between Mortons Corners' congregation and Salem's, provided for Sunday service alternating in the morning and afternoon. One week Salem service would be held in the morning and St. John's in the afternoon; the next week it would be reversed. Unfortunately, during one of his trips to Mortons Corners, Rev. Reisinger contracted a severe cold from which he never fully recovered. In April of 1902, poor health forced Rev. Reisinger to resign and on May 22 (should be 23) of the same year, he died."

George Reisinger died May 23, 1902 at about 3:00 in the afternoon in the village of Springville, town of Concord, Erie Co, NY.  His doctor reported a 5 day illness with death from Jaudice, with a contributing cause of Bilous Fever.  As per his death certificate, burial was May 27, 1902 in Danville, IL.  He is shown on the death certificate as a married Clergyman, born in Germany.  His father, born in Germany, is listed as Thomas Reisinger.  (This disagrees with Frances Sutton's family information and requires further research.)   The mother's name is not given, but her birthplace is listed as Germany.

Among the enterprises which contribute to the business interest of Washington is the bakery, confectionery, and ice cream establishment of John G. Reisinger, located at 235 G Street. This business was originally established on 4 1/2 street in 1961 and at the present location in 1876, and although commencing in a small and modest manner, it has now reached fine proportions. The premises occupied are well arranged for conducting this business and elegantly furnished, being 20 X 100 feet in dimensions. All kinds of bread, cake, confectionery, and ice cream are manufactured and sold at wholesale and retail. Parties, balls, weddings, soirees, receptions, and other entertainments furnished at the shortest notice and on the most reasonable terms. Mr. Reisinger was born and educated in Germany and has been a resident of Washington about 30 years. His fine business and business place must be a source of gratification to him. His success being the result of his industrious habits and progressive ideas. (Historical and Commercial Sketches of Washington and Environs -- Its Prominent Places and People (page 176), 1884)
